[Overlap syndrome - asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.]

Authors: Płusa T Abstract Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as separate diseases are considered for a long time. Now this concept needs to be re-evaluated because in many clinical situations both diseases may coexist, or one condition may evolve into the other. Especially in older patients with obstructive disease an overlapping diagnosis of asthma and COPD may be observed. Epidemiological data show that overlap syndrome is recognized by the coexistence of incompletely reversible airway obstruction and features of airway remodeling. The analysis of clinical symptoms indicates that the risk factors are the same in asthma and COPD, and a role of inflammatory process in the small airways may be a key point to understand the pathology of overlap syndrome. Studyin...

[When does nicotine dependence begin?]

Authors: Siemińska A Abstract Tobacco use leads in short time to nicotine dependence. Mechanisms of this process remain still not quite understood, of importance is also a question: When does nicotine dependence begin? The present review reports commonly used definition of nicotine dependence (according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition and International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Health Related Problems Tenth Revision), as well as its limited value in detecting first symptoms of this process. The review presents also the concept, which links the beginning of dependence with diminished autonomy (i.e., autonomy theory), results of studies supporting this concept, and neurophysiologic model of sensitization-homeostasis for nicoti...

Statins reduce deaths from infection and respiratory illness, data eight years on from trial suggests

The death rate among patients prescribed a statin in a major trial that ended in 2003 is still lower than those given a placebo, even though most participants in both groups have been taking statins ever since. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines)

Immune Modulation as Adjunctive Therapy for Pneumocystis pneumonia

Pneumocystis is an opportunistic fungal respiratory pathogen that causes life-threatening pneumonia (Pcp) in patients suffering from defects in cell-mediated immunity, including those with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and immunosuppression secondary to chemotherapy or organ transplantation. Despite major advances in health care, the mortality associated with Pcp has changed little over the past 25  years. Pcp remains a leading cause of death among HIV infected patients, with mortality rates of 50% or higher for patients developing severe Pcp. In addition, as more potent immunosuppressive therapies are developed for chronic inflammatory diseases, more cases of Pcp are occurring in non-HIV patients and in previously unreported clinical settings. These features highlig...
