Has growth in electronic cigarette use by smokers been responsible for the decline in use of licensed nicotine products? Findings from repeated cross-sectional surveys

Conclusions The shapes of trajectories since 2011 suggest that electronic cigarettes are probably not responsible for the decline in use of licensed nicotine products. Electronic cigarettes appear to have increased the total market for use of non-tobacco nicotine-containing products. (Source: Thorax)

Epidemiology of pneumothorax - finally something solid out of thin air

Pneumothorax is a common pathology. Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) conventionally refers to patients with no underlying lung disease, while those with established lung pathology are classified as secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP). Commonly quoted estimates of incidence of spontaneous pneumothoraces are based on studies that are often many years old and from single centres 45 years ago in the USA1 and 30 years ago in Sweden:2 with a reported overall incidence of 18–24 per 100 000 cases per annum for men and 1.2–6 per 100 000 for women and that of PSP as 7.4–18 cases (age-adjusted incidence) and 1.2–6 cases per 100 000 population per year for men and women, respectively.1 2 More recently, Gupta et al3 published the largest epide...

Triple inhaler therapy for COPD

The randomised controlled trial (GLISTEN) by Frith et al1 showed significant improvements in trough FEV1, health-related quality of life and rescue medication when long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMA: as either tiotropium or glycopyrronium) were added to inhaled corticosteroid/long-acting beta-agonist (ICS/LABA: as fluticasone/salmeterol) in 773 patients with moderate-to-severe COPD (FEV1 57.2%) over 12 weeks. The authors concluded that this was the first study, which conclusively demonstrates the benefits of triple therapy compared with dual therapy. In a retrospective cohort study using health informatics reported by Short et al,2 2853 patients with moderate-to-severe COPD were followed up over 4.65 years; of whom, 996 were receiving ICS/LABA (FEV1 62.7%) and 1857 receivin...

Survivorship in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Challenges Faced and Steps Forward.

This article summarizes the major issues faced by NSCLC survivors and suggests appropriate management. Future collaborative efforts are needed to further elucidate the complex issues that affect overall QOL and HRQOL in NSCLC survivors and to develop appropriate interventions in this large and diverse survivor population.
