Dyspnea in patients with asthma, allergic rhinitis and mouth breathing

CONCLUSIONS: the major respiratory symptoms were found in physical activity associated with speech, followed by physical activity per se. Already in communicative activities, only activities that required more vocal intensity were reported to be hampered by some subjects. (Source: Revista CEFAC)

Food Allergies: The Implications for Correctional Facilities

The prevalence of food allergies in the inmate population is a relatively unknown and perhaps underreported health issue. An inmate with an undetected food allergy is at risk for anaphylaxis or less serious complications and is becoming an increasing concern to correctional facilities. Allergic responses to foods cause many symptoms, including cutaneous, gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiovascular, and anaphylactic. These nonspecific symptoms are often first thought to be related to other conditions. Cell-mediated disorders, food intolerances, and pharmacologic conditions should be considered in the differential diagnosis and appropriately ruled out. The symptoms may mimic other problems, and allergic reactions would not be among the first conditions considered in the differential diagno...

Predicting Mortality among Older Adults Hospitalized For Community‐Acquired Pneumonia: An Enhanced Curb Score Compared With Pneumonia Severity Index

Conclusions:  An enhanced CURB score predicted 30‐day mortality with at least the same accuracy as PSI class did among older adults hospitalized for CAP. External validation of this score in other populations is the next step to determine whether it can be used more widely.© 2012 The Authors. Lung ultrasound in critically ill patients: a new diagnostic tool

The objective of this review was to evaluate the clinical applications of lung ultrasound by searching the PubMed and the Brazilian Virtual Library of Health databases. We used the following search terms (in Portuguese and English): ultrasound; lung; and critical care. In addition to the most relevant articles, we also reviewed specialized textbooks. The data show that lung ultrasound is useful in the differential diagnosis of pulmonary infiltrates, having good accuracy in identifying consolidations and interstitial syndrome. In addition, lung ultrasound has been widely used in the evaluation and treatment of pleural effusions, as well as in the identification of pneumothorax. This technique can also be useful in the immediate evaluation of patients with dyspnea or acute respiratory failur...

Adherence to guidelines and its impact on outcomes in patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia at a university hospital

CONCLUSIONS: In the population studied, admission and treatment criteria that were in accordance with the guidelines were associated with favorable outcomes in hospitalized patients with CAP. Cerebrovascular disease, as a risk factor, and guideline-concordant antibiotic therapy, as a protective factor, were associated with 30-day mortality. (Source: Jornal Brasileiro de Pneumologia)
