The role of non‐invasive home mechanical ventilation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease requiring prolonged weaning

Conclusions : These findings suggest that based on the potential for improvement in long‐term survival, non‐invasive HMV should be considered in patients with severe COPD and persistent chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure after prolonged weaning.

Airway Dimensions and Pulmonary Function in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Bronchial Asthma

Conclusions:  Airway caliber in asthma may be smaller than in COPD. Airflow limitations correlated more closely with peripheral airway luminal area in patients with asthma plus emphysema than in patients with asthma alone.

Changes in lung composition and regional perfusion and tissue distribution in patients with ARDS

Conclusions:  In patients with ARDS there are changes in both lung composition and the distribution of tissue and perfusion that may account in part for the physiological changes that define the syndrome.

Potential benefits of early continuous positive pressure ventilation in patients with rapidly progressive interstitial pneumonia

Conclusions:  Early intervention with NIV, mainly continuous positive pressure ventilation, is beneficial for the management of patients with RPIP. A randomized controlled study in a large population is needed, to confirm the value of early NIV.

The Progression of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is Heterogeneous: The Experience of the BODE Cohort.

CONCLUSIONS: The progression of COPD is very heterogeneous. A majority of patients show no statistical significant decline of FEV1 or increase in BODE. The multidimensional evaluation of COPD should offer insight into response to COPD management.
